YouTube monetisation in India 2026: the full requirement checklist

Most creators know the headline numbers and get tripped up by everything else. Here's the complete list.

The core thresholds (need one path, not both)

Path A: 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 public watch hours in the trailing 12 months. Path B: 1,000 subscribers + 10 million valid Shorts views in the trailing 90 days.

Only public videos count toward watch hours — unlisted and private videos don't, and neither does watch time that happened before a video was made public.

The conditions people miss

No active Community Guidelines strikes. A single active strike blocks monetisation entirely, even if you clear every number.

Two-factor authentication enabled on your Google account — this is now mandatory before you can even apply.

AdSense account linked, and it must be a single AdSense account per channel — trying to share one account across multiple channels causes review delays.

Content must comply with advertiser-friendly guidelines — this is reviewed manually after you apply, separately from the strike check. Borderline content (excessive profanity, sensitive topics without context) can pass the numeric threshold and still fail human review.

Residency and tax details. Indian creators need a PAN linked for tax withholding purposes — AdSense will hold payments until this is submitted, which surprises a lot of first-time applicants.

The review timeline

After you hit the numbers and apply, review typically takes 30 days, sometimes longer during high-volume periods. A second, informal review of content quality happens continuously even after acceptance — repeated demonetised videos can trigger a re-review of the whole channel.

What doesn't help and what does

Purchased subscribers and views don't advance you toward the watch-hour requirement in any meaningful way for views (watch time from low-quality traffic tends to be extremely short, contributing little to the 4,000-hour count) — treat any promotional boost as a credibility and momentum tool at most, not a shortcut through the actual thresholds. The watch-hour requirement specifically rewards real, sustained viewing, which only comes from content people actually want to finish.

After you're approved

Approval isn't permanent — a channel that later fails to maintain advertiser-friendly content, accumulates strikes, or has a sustained drop in valid engagement can be suspended from the programme. Treat the approval as an ongoing bar, not a one-time gate.
